The Big Bench Community Project
Many MTW clients have discovered a Big Bench on their travels in northern Italy and beyond.
The first Big Bench was conceived and constructed in 2010 by automobile designer Chris Bangles, an American living in Clavesana, Piemonte. With the help of friends and neighbours, Chris built a simple object that was accessible and free for all to enjoy. Visitors found that its oversize nature and fine views left them with a sense of curiosity and fun, and from there the idea spread.
Communities may apply to build their own Big Bench, with the Project donating the original design for free, on condition that it is constructed in a place of natural beauty which is accessible to all. There are now hundreds up and and down the country, and as far afield as Spain, Romania, Scotland, Sweden and Japan.
Why not write to us telling us the Big Benches you have visited, and when – include a photo, if you like – and we will add them to this page.
