This 9th Century Benedectine Abbey is situated in Umbria’s Val Nera, a lush valley, so remote it was described by one monk as a ‘desert with trees and rivers’.
San Pietro in Valle was part of the network of religious structures built for monks and pilgrims travelling between Rome and Ravenna.
Although destroyed by Saracens, it was rebuilt in the 10th and 11th centuries. Its superb Romanesque architecture houses important frescoes.
MTW customers sleep and eat in this unique structure when visiting central Italy.
