Cannonau, or Grenache
Cannonau is the name used in Sardegna. This grape finds its ideal terroir in the hot climate and poor soils of the island.
The grape is grown throughout Sardegna, but its finest examples are to be found in the granite and limestones of the areas around Dorgali, Oliena and Mamoiada. The top picture (📸 Gianni Careddu) shows a Cannonau vineyard at the foot of the limestone cliffs in Oliena.
There is some argument about its origin – the Sardinians claim it as theirs, whereas the Spanish believe it to have originated there.
