MT&W customers trekking the Heart of the Italian Alps self-guided walk, or visiting with one of our small group trips, can make a detour to the crest of the Côte de Gargantua.
This nature reserve and morainic (glacial) outcrop extends into the central Aosta Valley.
It is a dramatic illustration of the profound effects of the advance and retreat of the glaciers of 15,000 years ago. As part of the itinerary, you can take a short optional detour on your first day of walking to enjoy its spectacular views.
The name comes from one of the central characters of François Rabelais’ 16th Century pentalogy of novels about two giants (father and son), Gargantua and Pantagruel.
