  • From France to Sicilia

In its entirety, the Appenine mountain range stretches from the French border down the spine of Italy, all the way to north-east Sicilia. It divides continent from peninsular, and east from west.

The northern section, the Appenino Ligure-Piemontese, stretches from the Maritime Alps to the border with Toscana, straddling the boundary between the regions of Piemonte and Liguria. The highest point of this part of the range, Monte Maggiorasca (1804m), is actually just outside the border, in Emilia Romagna.

This is a wild area divided by crystalline rivers like the Borbera, pictured, and populated with deer and wolves. The Vie del Sale – the Salt Roads – criss-cross the range in an ancient network of trails which connects the coast with the inland areas.
