The name Carretta was originally believed to derive from the celtic ‘car’, meaning ‘stone’, referring to an outcrop close to the estate.
Recent research, however, has uncovered a document in the Guarene archives (📸 Tenuta Carretta), wherein a certain domina (noblewoman) Careta sells land near Piobesi d’Alba in 1353. There’s an even earlier reference (1334) to a different Careta Costanzi, believed to be her grandmother.
In a contract of 1467 the landowner, Damiano Piobesi, authorised the Porrini brothers to work and harvest on Cassina Careta, and it is here that the modern story begins.
