There is an unexpectedly deep connection between the region of the Langhe – source of Barolo and Barbaresco wines – and the Riviera city of Genova.
James MacNay (Italian Wine Ambassador) and Cinzia Long (cheesemonger, cook and nature guide) invite you to learn about this relationship and much more, on this unforgettable trip to a wine lover’s paradise.
The itinerary begins in La Superba, as Petrarca called this coastal city, then moves to the UNESCO world heritage region of Langhe-Roero-Monferrato, home of Barolo. You’ll be introduced to inspiring winemakers and sleep in three characterful hotels, from an elegant palazzo, to an ancient castle, to an exquisitely appointed villa.
As we journey, James will bring the landscape and the wine to life.
Other highlights include one of Cinzia’s tutored cheese tasting and picnics al fresco and a visit with lunch at a prestigious pasta maker. MTW guests eat in authentic restaurants, from traditional trattorie to Michelin-starred restaurants.

Meet in Genova in time for a welcome aperitivo and a meal in an Old Town trattoria.
Our hotel is 4 stars and set in an elegant palazzo signorile on the harbour.
We recommend arriving one or two nights before, to better enjoy the city’s many treasures; or enquire to organise a pre-trip extension in a wonderful hotel on the Portofino peninsular.
A one hour transfer takes us to the rolling hills of Gavi for our first winery visit. Our winery here is in the Tassarolo sub-zone, where the higher altitude and iron-rich, clay-rich soils deliver the fullest-bodied style of wine.
After the tasting enjoy a light lunch and explore the town of Gavi and its imposing fort.
Our hotel, a twelfth-century castle, is a short drive away. Enjoy a sumptuous meal with great wines from the extensive cellars.
A short transfer takes us to the legendary winery of Scarpa, in Nizza Monferrato. Scarpa’s fame lies in their production of Barbera, which we will of course taste – but they also make a range of other wines from locally significant grapes – and, of course, the world’s best Vermouths.
A winery visit and tasting is followed by lunch at the winery and these are all included in your trip fee.
Lovers of literature may recognise this town as the home of novelist Cesare Pavese, whose works bring the Langhe-Monferrato to life as a living, breathing being. We will take some time to explore the places and legacy of Pavese after lunch.
Dinner is in a local Osteria close to the hotel.
We bid farewell to Monferrato and head in the direction of Canale, the wine town at the heart of the Roero growing region. En route we stop at a local growers’ co-operative for a tasting and lunch (both included in the trip fee).
Our hotel, Tiboldi, is a luxurious converted villa owned by the important Malvirà winery. Guests can enjoy the outdoor pool and terrace bar in the exquisite surroundings of the Roero vineyards.
Time to explore the surrounding vineyards before an opulent dinner at the hotel, with rarities and old vintages from the extensive cellars.
We transfer to Alba for a guided tour with a licensed city guide of this handsome, wealthy city. The tour is included in the price, although you might prefer to explore the shops, bars and restaurants at your leisure.
Choose your own lunch spot from the wealth of restaurants, and pay locally. Truffle season is by now in full swing so there is ample opportunity to try this luxury.
We return to the hotel after lunch to enjoy its facilities and beautiful setting.
In the evening we visit the Malvirà winery for a tour and tasting, exploring in particular their extraordinary back catalogues of white Roero Arneis DOCG and red Nebbiolo-based Roero DOCG.
After Malvirà we head into town for a dinner at a Michelin-star restaurant, which is included in your trip fee.
If you’re feeling active, join Cinzia for an early morning circular walk to a local beauty spot.
We’ve an appointment for a tasting at an important Barolo winery, followed by the chance to explore Barolo town itself. Lunch is at your choice of establishment – plenty of choice – pay locally.
In the evening we visit the gastronomic capital of Bra, to stroll its Baroque streets and enjoy its shops or an aperitif before dinner. Dinner is at one of our favourite restaurants, a 100-year-old institution of the town.
We leave Tiboldi for the hills of Barbaresco, where we visit a winery for a tasting, followed by a visit of the village and its famous tower.
After the tasting, we walk or drive to a local beauty spot, where the delights continue, courtesy of one of Cinzia’s entirely hand-made, legendary picnics.
After this magical experience, we head to Turin for an afternoon drop-off outside the city-centre hotel we use. Accommodation and meals from this point are not included in the itinerary, but we can of course help you to book. Porta Nuova station is a short walk from our drop-off point.
